About 30 years ago Wim Rutten started collecting magnolias and thought it would be a complete collection in some years. This interesting family of plants is so large that by now he knows that this is impossible.

The collectionlist now contains 500 different magnolias. They are grown in a garden that is about 1 ha, amidst many other plants and trees, especially conifers and Hydrangea (no H. macrophylla).

Magnolias which are too young or not hardy are growing in a glasshouse in pots or are planted against its walls on the inside and outside of the glasshouse (M. grandiflora).

As a member of the Magnolia Society he has contact with other magnoliaphiles all over the world and so he knows all the new developments in this field.

The collection is the reference collection of the Royal Horticultural Society of the Netherlands (called K.V.B.C.)
